With our initial 5-year plans for the homestead underway, I decided to sit down and start thinking about what phase 2 of things around here might look like. We’ve got a couple of acres on the north end of our property that’s never really been used for anything and is just a wooded, sloped piece of ground.
Good ol’ ChatGPT and I got to work looking at several possible uses for that space and came up with some really interesting possibilities. Here are some ideas that I’m thinking seriously of doing going forward. Maybe not all of these, but certainly some could be fun…
đČ Low-Impact Agricultural & Forestry Uses
Specialty Mushroom Cultivation

- Shiitake, oyster, or lionâs mane mushrooms do really well on cut hardwood logs.
- Shade and moisture in a woodland environment are perfect.
- Low investment to start, and I can sell fresh mushrooms at my farm store, farmer’s markets, or to local restaurants.
Agroforestry / Woodland Medicinals
- Plants like ginseng, goldenseal, and black cohosh naturally grow in shaded forests and fetch a high price.
- Takes patience (years to mature) but could be a long-term âsavings accountâ crop.
Firewood or Timber Sales
- Even on just 2 acres, I can selectively harvest firewood.
- Bundle and sell alongside our farm store products or offer it to our Harvest Hosts RV guests.
đ Livestock & Grazing Options
Goat Browsing / Brush Control

- Goats love rough, sloped, wooded areas that sheep and horses wonât touch.
- They can keep the understory clear, provide meat/milk if we want, and theyâre also fun âambassadorsâ for visitors to the homestead.
- Bonus: Goat yoga or âmeet the goatsâ events for guests can be held.
Pigs on Rotation
- Pigs can root through underbrush and help clear land while raising pork.
- Pigs will need fencing and careful management but they could turn the unused woods into productive space over time.
đ Recreational & Guest Experience
Primitive Camping or Glamping

- Sloped woods can be a feature, not a bug â I can tuck in a few rustic tent pads, or even a glamping tent/yurt.
- We can tie this camping into our Harvest Hosts setup as a premium âstay overnight under the treesâ option.
Nature Trails / Walking Path
- We can clear a loop trail for our farm visitors to walk through the shady areas provided by all the trees.
- We can add simple signs about the trees, wildlife, or our farm history, which could be included as part of a âfarm experience tour.â
Archery / Axe Throwing Range
- The woods help provide a natural backstop.
- We can run it as a fun seasonal activity for our guests or for small groups.
đ Wildlife & Pollinator-Friendly
Apiary (Beekeeping)

- The wooded area provides forage and shelter.
- Honey is a great product for our farm store, and the bees will improve pollination across our whole property.
Wildlife Habitat / Hunting Lease
- Even this small acreage can be leased for seasonal bowhunting (deer, turkey, squirrel, rabbit).
- Alternatively, we could market it as a wildlife-viewing area to our visitors.
⥠Out-of-the-Box Options
Tiny Orchard / Specialty Fruits

- Some heritage fruits (pawpaws, persimmons, elderberries) love edge-of-woods environments.
- Unique, marketable crops that fit the Kentucky landscape.
Outdoor Event Space
- Rustic wooded ceremony site (weddings, vow renewals, gatherings).
- Even a 20â30 person âwoodland chapelâ area could rent well.
So, what do you think? Do any of these possibilities sound like something you’d take advantage of if they were available? Drop me a comment and let me know.
Until next time…
–Chris
